Maintenance release 2017.10 - BETA1

release

(Luca Giambonini) #1

Dear all,

we are proud to release the first beta of the upcoming maintenance release of Gödel.

This release provides all the latest packages currently waiting in [testing]. It means, new xorg and libglvnd, new kernel and a lot of new packages (see announcement “TODO”).

The main goal of the ISO is to provide an updated backup of chakra “just in case” something goes wrong after the move of testing into stable. Catalyst support has been removed, only the opensource driver can be used for AMD cards. For Nvidia is still possible to boot with proprietary drivers as usual.

This release is not just a maintenance ISO, but for the first time it is automatically generated. Thanks to gitlab-ci is now possible for our devs to spin new ISO on request using only a browser. This approach has enormous advantages, for instance we can always build a release in a clean environment making the final ISO more reliable and automate the release process.
Moreover, we want to release new ISO more often and gitlab continuous integration is one piece of the puzzle which makes this possible. We have also defined a new ISO release model (TODO, link) that will define the next milestones.

All issues related to the ISO must be opened on gitlab
To get the current status of the 2017.10 release you can look at the milestone status page.
You also will see a different nomenclature for the testing ISO. For instance the beta release name:
chakra-2017.09.29-02a2e91d-beta1-x86_64.iso

  • chakra-2017.09: is the release year + month, for development releases contains also the day
  • 02a2e91d: is the git commit hash, with that is possible to retrieve the stages passed in the pipeline for that specific commit

The proposed final release date is October 8th.

The ISO boots fine for me on an Intel+Nvidia standard laptop and an Intel+Nvidia hybrid graphics laptop with both free and proprietary drivers.

I also tested installation on the hybrid system using xfs and ext4, all went well.

The only issues I found:

  • The known problem with hybrid graphics drivers not being installed correctly. The installed system runs fine, but one needs to manually setup PRIME or Bumblebee afterwards to make the most out of their system.
  • With btrfs, I suffered from this issue during GRUB installation, however it seems to be related to how my system is partitioned.

As is, I give this the green light! Let’s hope no showstoppers are found so we can release as planned.

(tom) #3

can the netinstall feature be used?

(Luca Giambonini) #4

no, is not included in this release. But is foreseen to be added in the next mayor release.
If you are interested, you can help to define the netinstall groups. Open an issue on gitlab and define some groups, then we can discuss togheter. Here a more detailed explanation with some .yaml examples.

Fortsetzung der Diskussion von Maintenance release 2017.10 - BETA1:

I’m running the Beta right now and first impressions are good. The Textmode and “no KMS” settings work like a charm with screens with broken EDID-strings like mine.

The only things missing are “gnome-disk-utility” and “pkgbrowser” of course.

(tom) #6

in den calamares debug-infos i saw the locale isn’t set to the correct “one”

(Luca Giambonini) #7

Could you be more precide @brikler? which locale do you expect?
Already searched for a duplicate in the calamares bug tracker?

(tom) #8

i had expect german locale because timezone was berlin with german keymap.
i didn’t search the bug tracker it was only a short trial.

how can i get the debug information because i wasn’t able to copy the debug infos?

i think this is related https://github.com/calamares/calamares/issues/529

(Rémy Epke) #9

I expected the ‘download here’ link to take me to a page telling me the sum(s) to check.
Could you add the hash here for integrity check purposes?

(Luca Giambonini) #10

Good observation, I added the sha on the first message.
For reference this is the main link to download testing images: https://rsync.chakralinux.org/releases/testing/

(Ron Brickle) #11

I downloaded the beta today ran it in live enviroment it ran well, only thing I noticed quipzilla was flicering when scrolling web pages ans nonfree didnt work it just hangged timming out will test more

(Rémy Epke) #12

What sort of GPU are you using? A little hardware info might help here.

will install when final arrives qupzilla not flickering now see what happens on nvidia install

(Rémy Epke) #17

First attempt: installation failed. Can’t remember the error message.
Rebooted to unlock the partition, shredded the partition, created a fresh ext4 and attempted a second time.
Worked, just took its time: roughly half an hour, where from last stable ISO it took 8 minutes.

Almost done personalising my account and stuff seems to just work, as usual.

(ugjka) #18

This was pre beta realease, not sure if this still counts, but I had to turn off autodefrag and space_cache and some other extras for my btrfs install. I had some data loss when did something ssd intensive. Now with those all turned off no more data loss. I think I only left compress=lzo option and also I’m doing discard via fstrim.timer instead

(tom) #19

bravo! :stuck_out_tongue:

was it possible with “umount /< mountpoint >” to unmount partition?
processes that was using the partition?
any debug infos?

if you want to make data unreadable the you need shredding a partition everything else is wasted time

(Ron Brickle) #20

trying to install nvidia on beta keep getting errors

Interesting, you have a recent card: GeForce GTX 1060

Summarizing:
a) running from free drivers does not boot, correct?
b) running with closed drivers you can enter the desktop but then you have issues with qupzilla

except for the qupzilla flickering, did you noticed something else? same issue on different apps?
You can try to change the Compositor method in kwin and see if something change.
