How to enable color emojis with ttf-noto-emoji

emoji

(ugjka) #1

So here is something I struggled a bit. I had ttf-noto-emoji installed and noticed that a couple emojis show up colored in Qupzilla but most were not, I did some research. And found that you need to prioritise the noto emoji font

Ok here is emoji demo page http://eosrei.github.io/emojione-color-font/full-demo.html
Check it and see if all of them show up colored.

If only some or none show up colored check first if you have ttf-noto-emoji installed and then create this file
~/.config/fontconfig/fonts.conf
with the contents

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?><!DOCTYPE fontconfig SYSTEM "fonts.dtd">
<fontconfig>

<match>
 <test name="family"><string>sans-serif</string></test>
 <edit name="family" mode="prepend" binding="strong">
   <string>Noto Color Emoji</string>
 </edit>
</match>

<match>
 <test name="family"><string>monospace</string></test>
 <edit name="family" mode="prepend" binding="strong">
   <string>Noto Color Emoji</string>
 </edit>
</match>

<match>
 <test name="family"><string>serif</string></test>
 <edit name="family" mode="prepend" binding="strong">
   <string>Noto Color Emoji</string>
 </edit>
</match>

<match>
 <test name="family"><string>Apple Color Emoji</string></test>
 <edit name="family" mode="prepend" binding="strong">
   <string>Noto Color Emoji</string>
 </edit>
</match>

</fontconfig>

run
fc-cache -f -v
and reboot and check the demo page again!

Do you mean something like this?
Screenshot_20171004_140039
Or rather…do you mean the first, third and fourth in that screenshot should’ve been coloured as well?
I always thought that’s how they were meant to look…

This is how mine look now

Ok, I should mention that I’m on [testing], ymmv

Screenshot was from desky which is not on testing, but the lappy is and afair it shows the same.
I did see the black-and-white grinning face now and then but always assumed that was what it was supposed to look like…

I dunno why they didn’t work out of the box for me. I followed through this issue https://github.com/googlei18n/noto-emoji/issues/36

Nice! something that can be included in our ISO.
Btw. I can’t see all icons on your link, but instead I see them all here: http://getemoji.com/
