How do I install the driver for my USB wireless adapter with the chip RT2870STD?

(Michael) #1

Hi,
I am a new user who has landed in the Chakra world. After following the various guides on how to install chakra os, I’m having trouble installing the driver for my usb wireless adapter. I have the driver in tar.bz2 format and once the content is extracted on the desktop, I do not know how to compile and possibly other operations. I leave you the link to download the driver: mt7610u_wifi_sta_v3002_dpo_20130916
I hope someone can explain what I have to do.

Best regards

(tom) #2

it doesn’t work “out of the box”, no “plug and play”?

  1. provide more information about your adaptor
  2. we will see…

(Michael) #3

Thanks Tom for answering. It is not recognized automatically and requires the installation of the driver: in particular you have to compile it and follow the procedure, even if it is not clear to me what to do exactly.

adapter chip RT2870STD and you place the site: Mediatek_7610U

This is to download the tar.bz2 driver and see the readme file contained within the archive. I got stuck here because the procedure for compiling the source is not clear to me. In the file tells me that to compile I have to do:

  1. $ make
  2. $ make install

In fact it does not work. among other things, the procedure described in the readme file is not clear to me.

(tom) #4

after web search i found only old threads about this chip set and so far i can understand the solution overall is blacklist rt2800usb

maybe is one of our native speakers so kind and translate

(Michael) #5

Excuse me Tom, I did not understand the solution. Could you be clearer?

you place the readme file:

MORE INFORMATION
=================================================================================
If you want for rt2870 driver to auto-load at boot time:
A) choose ra0 for first RT2870 WLAN card, ra1 for second RT2870 WLAN card, etc.

B) create(edit) 'ifcfg-ra0' file in /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/,
   edit( or add the line) in /etc/modules.conf:
       alias ra0 rt2870sta

C) edit(create) the file /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-ra0
   DEVICE='ra0'
   ONBOOT='yes'

NOTE:
   if you use dhcp, add this line too .
    BOOTPROTO='dhcp'

*D) To ease the Default Gateway setting,
    add the line
    GATEWAY=x.x.x.x
    in /etc/sysconfig/network

Dongle/Clone Features:
======================
A) Dongle mode:
   	Provides a 1-to-N MAC address mapping mechanism such that more than one PC behind the STA
   	can transparently connect to the AP.

B) Clone mode:
	Provides a 1-to-1 MAC address mapping mechanism.
	STA can use own MAC as SA MAC or
			use user desired MAC as SA MAC or
		    use source MAC of first packet coming from wired device as SA MAC.
	NOTE: In this mode, only the PC who own the specified MAC can connect to the AP.

C) Hybrid mode(Dongle+Clone):
	Provides a 1-to-N MAC address mapping mechanism such that more than one PC behind the STA
   	can transparently connect to the AP.
	STA can use own MAC as SA MAC or
			use user desired MAC as SA MAC or
		    use source MAC of first packet coming from wired device as SA MAC.

D) Please refer to "Config STA to link as dongle mode..." in iwpriv_usage.txt for

use code tags for such long litany!

it seems there is a driver conflict and i would try to blacklist rt2800usb as suggested in the threads

(Michael) #7

I tried Tom the blacklist method, but it does not work. The adapter is not recognized by the system. I do not know how to make it recognizable … among other things it speaks that it is compatilke with kernel 2.4 and 2.6 instead Chakra uses the 4.x version.

(Neofytos Kolokotronis) #8

There are a couple of related posts on ArchLinux’s forum:

https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=123827

https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=164042

And this on the wiki:
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Wireless_network_configuration#rt2x00

I only quickly read through them, but it looks like you could fix it by attempting to modprobe the correct driver.

(Michael) #9

Hi tetris4,
could you make it clearer how to operate the wireless adapter? What do you intend to change the correct driver?

I launched this command: $ lsusb

Bus 001 Device 003: ID 148f: 7601 Ralink Technology, Corp. MT7601U Wireless Adapter

then I do not know what to do: I do not know if the driver is already present in the system or I have to install it from the source as described by the file read me in the previous post.

(tom) #10

after boot run:

lsmod | grep rt2800usb

and

lsmod | grep rt2800pci

(Michael) #11

Guys finally the wireless usb adapter recognized him. I do not know what in particular I did to make it work, I just know that I did a little bit as suggested by the previous posts and obviously it worked.
