Chakra 2019.01 "Hawking" RC2 released

release

(Luca Giambonini) #1

The second release candidate is now released, and except for a calamares bug during partition selection, RC2 is very close to be the final version.

What’s new since RC1?

  • added vdpau driver and libs to enable HW accelerated video
  • moved the kickoff menu from the latte dock to the top left corner
  • renamed from 2018.12 to 2019.01

Fixed

  • slow startup in Live mode
  • slow start of calamares (around 1min the first run, caused by fc-cache )
  • update images in calamares and heritage

The release candidate does not have the final release name, but is named by the commit tag and date. Click here to download it. See How to create a live media for instructions on how to create a bootable flash drive. The sha512sum is:

i prefer the right upper corner because i am using the mouse with the right hand and its feel more comfortable for me.

years ago ubuntu moved the menu and buttons from the right to the left side and nobody liked it…so far i can remember and we can learn from this mistake to do it better

(kepszlok) #3

Both free and non-free boot are now working in live mode in Virtualbox. Things are working fast. Even partitioning worked fine, but the installed system still did not give a GUI.

Maybe that invalid surface format line means something.

Edit:

I had to change the default Graphics Controller in virtualbox to VBoxVGA. With that, now i have a working GUI.

(tom) #4

we should remove the unneded groups because it looks ugly

The font looks strange while browsing the internet in the RC2 ISO. The problem also happened in other browsers like firefox in my installation (installed using a RC1 ISO and performed a system upgrade with [testing] enabled).

I remove all the fonts except otf-noto-cjk, ttf-hack, ttf-noto and ttf-noto-emoji and solved the problem.

1 Is it a problem or a feature?
2 Can anyone reproduce the problem/feature?

Also one thing that is inaceptable is that there is no ask to install a grub config - It completly fucked up my booting by replacing everything.

I don’t want to use is as my daily linux os since it uses systemd which proved not reliable for me(a start/stop job is running…, dropping to emergency console not to mention that ugly debugging). So please ask to install a bootloader.

(tom) #7

have a look at /boot/grub there should be a grub.cfg.new

(HJ) #8

have a look at /boot/grub there should be a grub.cfg.new

Doesn’t matter since it is an efi system and has probably overwitten the default efi file in boot

root@devuan_openrc:/boot/efi/EFI# find . -maxdepth 2
.
./Microsoft
./Microsoft/Boot
./Microsoft/Recovery
./Boot
./Boot/bootx64.efi
./debian
./debian/grubx64.efi
./Chakra
./Chakra/grubx64.efi
root@devuan_openrc:/boot/efi/EFI#

(tom) #9

on my asus k50ij tapping on the touchpad doesn’t work and i must enable it, is this the default behavior?

in falkon and firefox is the default font “padmaa” the reason, change it to maybe “noto sans” and everything looks expected.

(Francesco Marinucci) #10

You should blame Calamares, since that is the installation manager.
There’s already an open issue where you can see the state of the feature and propose yourself to help adding the feature.
https://github.com/calamares/calamares/issues/517

(Luca Giambonini) #11

hm… where do you see that settings? I don’t see it in virtualbox

@brikler: good point, I will check that and cleanup the groups if necessary.

There is one new package, fontconfig 2.13.0 that can cause this problem. What I don’t understand is why when you remove other fonts it works. Can be that you have to regenerate the font cache?
Could you please tell me which font you are using for the browser? (a screenshot of the font configuration would be fine)

Yep, that’s a missing feature in calamares, we haven’t touched that module. You can open a bug report upstream.

(kepszlok) #12

We have an old version of Virtualbox, even in testing and there are no such option in it. I installed the latest Vbox under a Win10 host.

after boot in to the new system i got this error

The default one (I didn’t do any special configuration on it until the problem occurred, which means the issue should be able to reproduce)

(Luca Giambonini) #15

what about something like this?:

(Luca Giambonini) #16

Interesting, I know that when I tested with f2fs I encountered some problems. I will double check again.
I’m curious, why you use the f2fs file system? what are the benefits?

(tom) #17

only with dock on the bottom right side and without a panel?
it is unique
i like more a panel on the right side because i can see every time the watch and it fits better my laptop screen.

i think calamres had the not formatted and so it was impossible to write

it is designed for storage with flash memory and only btrfs have the “sdd” switch other fs avoid features to suit well a ssd.

Hi,
Just installed RC2 on real hardware. All is working fine except one little thing :
In home folder no personnal directory : Images, Music , …
Just launch xdg-user-dirs-update

(Luca Giambonini) #19

EDIT: I found the problem!

@csgib could you please paste the installation log (if you have it)? is under /var/log/installation.log thanks.
to call the xdg-user-dirs-update we have a custom module called _usercfg, but seems that there is something wrong:
https://code.chakralinux.org/chakra/tools/calamares-chakra/blob/master/src/modules/_usercfg/main.py
