Audio is Garbled

(Phillip Mc Gee) #1

[details=Hardware information]Now that my system is booting again (as resolved over here), my audio is messed up. In a nut shell, there is this persistent static sound that lasts for a second or so after playback ends. I didn’t notice this before, and the weird burbling sound on the front track is there during playback. The front track is barely audible. I also found that it appears to be operating in mono mode (tested this with the left speaker/right speaker sound test). Another thing that I discovered is that the sound card listed keeps resetting to the nVidia card, instead of my built-in audio card. So, I’m wondering if this might be connected. I’m thinking ideally, if I can permanently disable the nVidia audio device, my system might return to working again. I tried blacklisting the driver, but that only completely disabled my audio, which is less than ideal.

Help would be greatly appreciated.

you can select the sound card by start alsamixer

alsamixer

then press F6 to select the sound card

(Phillip Mc Gee) #3

I’ve tried that multiple times and it hasn’t made a difference in the audio quality. Then after a reboot, it returns to NVidia being the primary. I’ve even tried using alsactl store to make a difference, to no effect.

$ aplay -l
**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 0: PCH [HDA Intel PCH], device 0: ALC3861 Analog [ALC3861 Analog]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 1: NVidia [HDA NVidia], device 3: HDMI 0 [HDMI 0]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 1: NVidia [HDA NVidia], device 7: HDMI 1 [HDMI 1]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0

I think the devices are fighting each other, or something.

do you see this problem when playing something on a specific program or is a general behaviour?
what is the “nVidia Audio device” ? is the audio output of your nvidia card? why not use the one from Intel (motherboard)?

(Phillip Mc Gee) #5

It is a general behavior problem. I keep trying to use the one from my motherboard and would love to completely disable the one on my nVidia (graphics) card, but it refuses to actually disable.

You can try to use pactl to select the defualt audio device, as listed here:

(Phillip Mc Gee) #7

That is an excellent find, but the responses for pactl would indicate there may be a separate issue somewhere, since it only lists one item for each.

$ pactl list short sources
0       alsa_output.pci-0000_00_1b.0.analog-stereo.monitor      module-alsa-card.c      s16le 2ch 44100Hz       SUSPENDED
$ pactl list short sinks
0       alsa_output.pci-0000_00_1b.0.analog-stereo      module-alsa-card.c      s16le 2ch 44100Hz       SUSPENDED

I’m going to mark this as solved. Turns out that during everything that went on, my headphones became disconnected on my tower. Sorry for soaking up everyone’s time and thank you for the help.
